Summary

Meddling gods。 A magical card system。 An apocalypse no one could have predicted。

Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends。 He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization。 But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that?

When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore。 Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe。 And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers。

Jake, wasting his day slacking off in the cooler, as he usually did, found himself alone in a completely new and very dangerous world。 Can he learn to survive? Can he collect enough cards and create a good enough deck to fight back against the monsters that have overtaken his former home? And why are these strange people that look a lot like elves knocking on the door of the market he is hiding in and asking to buy some of his goods?

The gods may have stacked the deck against him, but Jake just might have a few cards up his sleeve that will help him survive。

Cracking read, enjoyed it alot。Only gripe if you can call it that is the Power of the main character seems too high at the end of the book but I enjoyed the story and look forward to seeing how a sequel develops the characters and story。 Theres so much potential for this story and the author has broken in to the genre with a strong starting point so I look forward to his next work。

I rather enjoyed this。While there are certain clichés and tropes that tend to appear in this genre, I thought that the author did a good job of navigating or avoiding most of them, and it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the books。I also rather enjoyed how pleasant the book was, although as the book progressed the tension increased。 I found that the main character made some questionable decisions, but that's not entirely unrealistic, and me disagreeing with the protagonist doesn't mean that I rather enjoyed this。While there are certain clichés and tropes that tend to appear in this genre, I thought that the author did a good job of navigating or avoiding most of them, and it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the books。I also rather enjoyed how pleasant the book was, although as the book progressed the tension increased。 I found that the main character made some questionable decisions, but that's not entirely unrealistic, and me disagreeing with the protagonist doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it。I felt that the main character had a bit of character development, but many supporting characters tended to be rather flat。 My general enjoyment of the story more than made up for it。I'm very keen to read the next book in the series, especially as it'll be interesting to see how the author navigates some of the events towards the end of the story。 。。。more

Very impressive。 I'm a voracious reader。 I also have a long commute to and from my work and listen to audiobooks both ways。 I listened to this narrated by Travis Baldree and before I'd even finished was searching for other J。R。 Mathews books! I very much hope to see many more works of similar quality by this author to buy for myself and friends。 Clearly an author with a future! didn’t skip a page! That’s the highest praise I can have for kindle books and light novels。 This was a very well written and edited book。 It was a decent size, with a quick pace & lots of plot milestones。 A LOT happens in book 1 but it was an enjoyable journey。

Jake's Magical Market was a really enjoyable read with a now-familiar premise in this genre; the absorption of our world into a larger magical ecosystem where everyone gets access to some form of magic (that usually runs off some kind of gamer mechanics) and only those strong enough to adapt quickly will survive。 However, where this book started to set itself apart was in two ways: 1。 The gamer mechanics in this book is card-based (I'm assuming like Magic the Gathering。。。 though I haven't played Jake's Magical Market was a really enjoyable read with a now-familiar premise in this genre; the absorption of our world into a larger magical ecosystem where everyone gets access to some form of magic (that usually runs off some kind of gamer mechanics) and only those strong enough to adapt quickly will survive。 However, where this book started to set itself apart was in two ways: 1。 The gamer mechanics in this book is card-based (I'm assuming like Magic the Gathering。。。 though I haven't played that so I might be wrong) instead of videogame based。2。 The viewpoint of the story was told from the perspective of a shopkeeper instead of an adventurer。 I was most excited about the second point because I felt it had the most room for originality in this corner of the literary market。 I have seen adventurers quickly get stronger in this sort of system many times now and it's nothing new to me。 The idea of a business owner getting success because he is a business owner and the advantages that brings to the table rather than the traditional fighting route is something that really intrigued me。 Unfortunately, despite that literally being the title of the novel, it soon gets abandoned in favour of a more traditional adventure style story。 The most frustrating thing about this is that this book was good at doing both things。 When Jake was in his market and growing his town, that was really enjoyable to read。 When he started going off and having his adventures, that also was enjoyable to read。 The frustration is that the book starts out with the promise of one thing and then delivers something else, essentially a bait and switch, and that robbed the second part of the story from the impact it could have had if I hadn't already got interested in something else。 To the book's credit, it does save itself by doing the second part of the book really well and taking the story in some directions I wasn't expecting, but I can't help but be disappointed for the opportunity that was lost by ignoring the original angle for something far more common。 The final flaw I have with this book is the lack of work on the side characters。 Jake meets and interacts with a lot of people and aliens in this book, and none of those characters are ever given much time to grow in the minds of the reader。 On the one hand, I don't mind that so much because I am a fan of stories that follow one character, but on the other, it meant that I wasn't attached to any of the relationships。 Not enough work was put into making them mean something to me which meant that this book missed a lot of opportunities to deliver emotional moments that could have elevated the story to another level。 Overall though, when the dust settled on my disappointment at the new direction of the story, I found myself enjoying what I was reading and by the time I finished the book I was eager to see what happened next。 I am hoping the wait for the next book won't be too long because I am interested to see where this story might go now that I have let go of my hopes for the story that the book's title promised。 。。。more

So much potential This novel started out very well。 I would give the first third a 3, perhaps 4。 The author then, apparently, ran out of ideas。

A fairly decent story and I am looking forward to others in the series。This was a fairly decent book but there was some plot issues。 The main character seemed to have developed a case of plot stupidity。 That is where the main character suddenly become stupid in order to further the stories plot。 There was at least three major incidents in this story in which the character did something very stupid in order to further the story。 Through out most of the book the main character (though riddled with A fairly decent story and I am looking forward to others in the series。This was a fairly decent book but there was some plot issues。 The main character seemed to have developed a case of plot stupidity。 That is where the main character suddenly become stupid in order to further the stories plot。 There was at least three major incidents in this story in which the character did something very stupid in order to further the story。 Through out most of the book the main character (though riddled with guilt about his decisions) still acted very intelligently in most cases。 (One example of this plot stupidity is where the main character tries to rush to get into an elevator so he can get out of the building but someone is blocking his way so he runs to try to get there while of distracting the person。 During the course of the distraction and the following combat the main character teleport many times but keeps trying to only run to the elevator)。 There are other examples of things like this happening throughout the story。 Despite all this the story was actually very good and I would recommend it to anyone。 。。。more

By far one of the best stories I have read 10/10Story was well told and the card system was quite ammusing。 Loved the way you added where you combine cards to level up instead of leveling through killing monsters。

Amazing Story TellingThis book was fascinating from beginning to end。 Fantasy, gaming, meditation, I would even daresay witchcraft all combined to create this incredible story。 I need more please 🥺

a simple but very enjoyable ride !For a first time book, this is very well done indeed。 Using a card based magic system that evolves as the story grows is an excellent premise。 MC is often too caught in his own headspace, but learns to deal with it。 I hate giving too much information as it could spoil the story for the next reader。 But this is a highly rated story, lots of 5 star reviews (justifiably earned)。 Try it and enjoy。 :)

Amazing and delightful story! The cover and title are misleading, this is abgrwat epic journey, easily enough for 2-3 books, of a young man growing on a transitioned world。 Jakebis likeable, believable character and its an amazing experience watching him grow both in power and as a person。 Highly recommended!

If you think of a few doesn't matter。I have to admit I saw the cover of this novel and didn't think it was something I would enjoy。 But I saw a few of the reviews and decided to give it a try。 This is one of the few times that a review made all the difference in the world! Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars。 It was an interesting book to listen。 I stumbled upon only due to some recommendation from Progression Fantasy sub and also mainly cos it was narrated by Travis Baldree。 I must say it was a long, long book。 There were several apt stopping points for book 1 but the author had other ideas。 He continued explore different cultures, social inequalities, politics etc。 Though it was fascinating to read all those, it got overwhelming about 3/4th through。 The stakes got h Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars。 It was an interesting book to listen。 I stumbled upon only due to some recommendation from Progression Fantasy sub and also mainly cos it was narrated by Travis Baldree。 I must say it was a long, long book。 There were several apt stopping points for book 1 but the author had other ideas。 He continued explore different cultures, social inequalities, politics etc。 Though it was fascinating to read all those, it got overwhelming about 3/4th through。 The stakes got higher and higher and the final chapter ended with a massive power boost。 To me it felt as though the author couldn't resist cramping everything in his first book。 I must add that the writing was good and the story path was also good but hindsight I fear there was too much to digest for one book。 There were a few good foreshadows which never saw its end。 As a whole book there are still several plot threads open。 Whether the author could match the first book? I don't know。The magic system was the best。 The author had certainly put a lot of effort in creating the card exchange magic system。 Each card's specialty was well described, easily understood, and importantly fun to imagine the possibilities。 Jake's character was non-boring, intelligent, compassionate, ruthless, and curious。 Other character were also written well。 The magic used was described adequately each time it was used。 Whether I approve of some of Jake's actions, I don't think so。 Towards the end there was a scene where I disapproved of Jake's actions。 The bitter aftertaste was tough to neglect and continued with me till the end。 Perhaps that is why I'm not satisfied with ending the book with stakes being higher than ever。 Overall, I can say that the book was entertaining and LitRPG was done well。 。。。more

This right here。 This right here was a hell of a lot of fun。 Characters and the MC felt real like glimpses of other MCs not just NPCs。 It was a an exponential story tho' kicks into high gear and doesn't slow down。 And it only succeeds in it because the foundation was solid。 The later half of the story could've benefited from being a little more fleshed out, and some pacing efforts。That being said, this is still a 5 star story, and i hope the author takes their time on the next, ill buy it day on This right here。 This right here was a hell of a lot of fun。 Characters and the MC felt real like glimpses of other MCs not just NPCs。 It was a an exponential story tho' kicks into high gear and doesn't slow down。 And it only succeeds in it because the foundation was solid。 The later half of the story could've benefited from being a little more fleshed out, and some pacing efforts。That being said, this is still a 5 star story, and i hope the author takes their time on the next, ill buy it day one。 。。。more

This is a tough book to review。 The idea is fantastic, and the main characters are, for the most part, 3 dimensional and consistent。 The plot is less consistent。 This is like 3 books in one, with the first two being from the same series and the third from a completely different series but somehow with the same main character。 The "first" book is great, the "second" is really good, and the "third" is a little out of left field and really nothing at all like the first two, but once you get past yo This is a tough book to review。 The idea is fantastic, and the main characters are, for the most part, 3 dimensional and consistent。 The plot is less consistent。 This is like 3 books in one, with the first two being from the same series and the third from a completely different series but somehow with the same main character。 The "first" book is great, the "second" is really good, and the "third" is a little out of left field and really nothing at all like the first two, but once you get past your whiplash it's still enjoyable。It almost read like a web serial, with several sections of very slow pace with little plot progression, then sections where things are happening so fast that you can't quite keep up。 I think some more aggressive content editing would have done wonders for this book。Still, a really fun first outing for the author。 。。。more
